If the business has just hit one of the dreaded slow times that no business owner enjoys, then anyone might feel a bit down in the dumps and wondering what to do next.
Hey, it’s not all doom and gloom. This could actually be a good time, where we can get to improve our small business marketing and take it to the next level. Here are 10 things that can be done right away…
Find the motivation for having started the small business originally
It’s easy to become tired and fed up when operating a business especially when working like a dog. A slow time presents us with the opportunity to get focused on why we wanted to start a business in the first place. Looking at the business with a fresh eye can stimulate new ideas.
Look for ways to save money
When it seems like the bottom line is suffering but you can’t quite work out why…then this is the time to look for ways to save money. For example, phone a supplier and negotiate a better deal, adjust the company advertising campaigns to focus on what’s working versus what’s not (more on this below), or write down ways to save energy in the office.
Promoting the brand with a new advertising campaign
Perhaps the reason why business is slow is because the company advertising isn’t hitting the mark? In a situation like this, really take stock and look closer at how the company’s brand is promoted, and the advertising campaign. Drop what doesn’t work and start a new campaign that is fresh and interesting.
Organize the workspace
There is just never enough hours in the day during a busy period to keep a workspace well organized. Fortunately, this is not the case during a slow time and there should have plenty of hours to clean out the desks, throw away or store old files, and just have a general clean-up to free everyone to have more room and enjoy the workspace more than currently.
Do a new promotion or contest
If the business is suffering from a slow time then perhaps it’s because the company is not giving clients a good enough reason to visit. With this in mind, how about doing a new promotion such as 20% off for new customers, or holding a contest where there is a give away for a free prize? These type of offers usually get new customers through the door.
Get away from it all
Sometimes, the best thing to do to improve the business during a slow time is to simply get away from it all for a short while. When there is trouble focusing on what needs to be done, then this may be a symptom of burn-out. A good vacation is in order so a business owner can come back refreshed. While away, it is pretty much guaranteed to come up with some interesting ideas to focus on when getting back to work. Inspiration comes at any time, so it could be while looking at the sites of the city you’re visiting or even in the shower!
Create a new business plan
Most people write a business plan when they are first starting out, but then quickly forget about it. A slow time allows for the perfect chance to create a new business plan that will give a business a new direction. Pay special attention to the company branding strategies.
Working too hard? If so, then right now is the perfect opportunity to delegate tasks so you are able to free up more of your time in the future. Work smarter, not harder.
Custom printed labels
Did you know that custom label printing can stimulate business? We’ve seen it happen. Create a label that has a coupon attached, which existing or new customers can easily bring into your store to get a discount. This is a great, proven way to get new customers.
Hire a sales team, either inside or outside the business
In order for your business to expand and grow, it’s essential to sell more products or services. With this in mind, start looking for a sales team during a slow period, so they can drum up new business for you and get things back on the right track. If you can’t afford to hire a sales team, talk to people and related industries who can give you referrals and offer them a nice commission for bringing in new business to you. Don’t forget to return the favor!
